This directory contains the ARIS-REDS data collected by the National Council of Applied Economic Research in Delhi. (www.ncaer.org) and the SEPRI data which collected based on the same sampling frame. There is no ongoing support for these data. Please check faq.txt to see if your question has been addressed. If you want to add to the faq.txt please email afoster@brown.edu. Also email afoster@brown.edu with server-related problems. The ARIS-REDS data were designed to constitute a nationally representative rural sample of Indian households and contain detailed economic, demographic, and village level information. Households and village data were first collected in 1969. Subsequent rounds were collected in 1970, 1971, 1982, 1999. and 2006 . Details on the original sample are in arismq.pdf. All available documentation is in this directory. Data are in sub-directories identified by year. The 1999 data are divided into public and secure components. In the 1999 public data files village identities are coded and links to REDS82 and ARIS 69-71 household data are supressed. These steps are taken because statistical identification of households is possible using village names in combination with the household data. 1999 weights are also suppressed as these could be used to recover the crosswalk to previous surveys. The 2006 data are only available as a fully secure component because they have not as yet been deidentified. To obtain cross-walk to village identifiers and/or previous survey rounds or any of the 2006 data the investigator must obtain IRB approval from their respective university or institution. The IRB-approved proposal should indicate the following a) that statistical identification of households or villages is possible with the secure data b) that linked data and cross-walks will be kept in a secure environment c) names of all investigators and research assistants with access to the linked data d) that linked data will only be used on projects with IRB approval e) that the linked data or the cross-walk cannot be provided to investigators or researchers not specifically identified in (c) f) that publications and presentations must not reveal village or individual level identifiers. Send approved IRB document to afoster@brown.edu in order to obtain access to the secure directory.
